These are the terms you agree to by using EvenOut. The most important one is the first: EvenOut keeps a record of who owes whom. It never moves your money.
EvenOut tracks what people spent and works out who owes whom. It does not hold, transfer, or process money. It is not a bank, a wallet, a payment processor, or an escrow service, and no balance shown in the app is money we are holding for you.
When you settle up, you pay the other person directly — cash, bank transfer, whatever you use. You then record that in EvenOut so the balance reflects it. Recording a settlement is a claim that a payment happened; it is not the payment.
UPI is available in India only. Where it is available, EvenOut can open a UPI app for you with the payee and the amount already filled in, using the UPI ID that person chose to publish. That is the whole of what it does. The payment itself happens entirely inside your UPI app, between your bank and theirs. We are not a party to it. Everywhere else, settling up works as it always has: you pay however you like and record it here.
Check the UPI ID before you pay. We cannot verify that a UPI ID belongs to the person it is shown against — nobody can, without being a payment provider, which we are not. The person who published it typed it in, and they may have typed it wrong. Your UPI app resolves the ID and shows you the registered name before you confirm: that screen, not ours, is what tells you where the money is going. A payment sent to the wrong UPI ID is between you, that recipient and your bank, and it is not usually reversible.
We cannot tell whether you paid. Nothing comes back to us from a UPI app, so opening one changes no balance by itself. The balance moves only when you record the payment in EvenOut afterwards, and that recording is a claim by you, exactly like any other settlement.
If you publish your own UPI ID, you are asking the people you split with to send money to it. Keep it correct, and remove it if it stops being yours.
The amounts in EvenOut are what you and the people you share with have entered. We do not verify them, we take no position on whether a debt is real or fair, and we are not a party to any agreement between you.
If you disagree about an expense, settle it with the person who entered it. We cannot arbitrate, reverse a settlement, or decide who is right.
You need to be at least 13 to use EvenOut. Keep your sign-in secure — anyone who can sign in as you can act as you, including recording expenses and settlements in your name. That includes your email: anyone who can read the inbox you sign in with can reset your password and get into your account.
One account per person. Do not impersonate anyone or sign up on someone else’s behalf.
The expenses, names, notes and comments you enter stay yours. You give us permission to store them and to show them to the people you have shared them with — which is simply what a shared ledger does.
Records you create become part of other people’s balances. That is why they survive your leaving: closing your account does not remove expenses and settlements from the groups you shared them with, because doing so would silently change what other people are owed. The comments on them stay as well, since a thread is half the other person’s and often records what was agreed. Your name is replaced with a placeholder instead.
· Enter debts you know are not real, or use the app to harass, threaten or pressure someone.
· Add people who have not agreed to be added, in order to send them unwanted records.
· Use reminders to badger someone. They are for a balance that is genuinely outstanding, and one a day is the most anyone will receive from you.
· Try to reach data that is not yours, probe for accounts, or work around the limits in the app.
· Automate access, scrape the service, or resell it.
We may suspend or close an account that does these things. Where we can, we will tell you why.
We work hard on getting the arithmetic right, and money correctness is the thing we take most seriously. Even so, EvenOut is provided as it is: we do not promise it will always be available, free of bugs, or suitable for any particular purpose, and you should not rely on it as your only record of a significant debt.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for any amount greater than what you have paid us — which today is nothing, because EvenOut is free.
You can delete your account at any time from within the app, once your balances are settled. You can also just stop using it. We may end or suspend the service, and if we shut it down we will give reasonable notice so you can get your records out.
If these terms change in a way that matters, we will say so in the app rather than quietly editing this page. Continuing to use EvenOut after a change means you accept it.
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute about them.
